Whether you’re trying to relax after a long day or are just looking for ways to calm down, there are plenty of tips and tricks to help. But, it’s important to note that not all of them will work for you and that finding the right ones can take some trial and error.
1. Do Deep Breathing Exercises
If you feel like your mind is constantly on the go, do a quick breathing exercise to clear your thoughts and relax your body. Try breathing in through your nose for a few seconds, then out through your mouth for a few seconds. Repeat this for four times, until you get into a rhythm.
2. Visualize a Stress-Releasing Activity
If the thought of going for a walk or doing some yoga strikes your fancy, give it a try. Even if you’re not a great walker, walking for a few minutes each day can help you to unwind.
3. Practice Progressive Muscle Relaxation
If anxiety is getting you down, learning to recognize the signs that your muscles are tense can be a huge help. Start by tensing specific muscle groups and letting them go, then repeating the process for a few times to get a good sense of how relaxed you are.
4. Visualize Your Favorite Place
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed and stressed, imagine your favorite place for relaxation–the beach, the mountains, the ocean or a quiet park. Use all your senses when envisioning your relaxing destination, focusing on smell, sound, sight and touch, says Caraballo.
